Britannia P&I Club
Insurance annual report design
This insurance annual report design combines Britannia P&I’s strategic report and financial statements within a single publication that supports both detailed financial reporting and engaging editorial content.
Designed to reflect the organisation’s heritage while introducing a fresh visual identity, the 72-page report balances photography, typography, charts and financial information in a format that is easy to navigate in print and digital formats.
One publication, two distinct purposes
The report design brings together two very different types of content. The opening strategic report includes messages from the Chairman and CEO, company developments and business updates, while the second half presents detailed financial statements and supporting notes.
Although each section has different requirements, the publication was designed to feel like one cohesive document rather than two separate reports.
A flexible 12-column grid provides the structure needed to accommodate everything from full-page photography and editorial layouts to financial tables, charts and infographics, maintaining consistency throughout.
Making complex financial information easier to navigate
Financial reporting formed a significant proportion of the publication, requiring careful attention to typography, spacing and page structure. Certain financial statements were designed using a single-column layout to prevent key explanatory sentences breaking awkwardly across multiple columns, improving readability without compromising the presentation of detailed financial data.
A subtle blue tint highlights the current year’s figures, making comparisons with previous years easier, while the distinctive blue fore-edge and border surrounding the notes section create a simple navigation aid that helps readers move quickly between the financial statements and supporting information.
A fresh photographic theme for a traditional organisation
Rather than introducing an entirely new visual identity, the report evolved previous editions through a distinctive photographic theme. Working closely with Britannia’s marketing team, we developed a series of close-up maritime images that transform familiar vessels into almost abstract compositions, revealing colour, texture and form from unexpected perspectives.
The photography creates a modern visual language while remaining true to the organisation’s maritime heritage. At the client’s request, every image presents vessels in pristine condition, avoiding any signs of corrosion or deterioration.
Managing a publication that continued to evolve
Producing the report required close collaboration with Britannia’s finance, marketing and leadership teams, with financial figures and supporting content changing throughout the project. Careful project management ensured every revision was incorporated accurately while maintaining consistency across the publication.
Alongside the printed annual report, we also prepared digital PDFs, a monochrome version for Companies House and a separate version for board approval and signing. We managed print production using FSC-certified woodfree coated paper with a satin finish, soft-touch laminate cover and perfect binding, creating a publication that feels as considered in the hand as it does on the page.
